Two vertical lines to the right of the C as well. “H”? “N”? “M”? Could be multiple characters, too.

It looks like an M to me but I’m unwilling to commit to that haha.

my best guess
C 1/L A ? 2 0 3 3 7 1

I wonder if you could get a little more detail by trying a pencil and paper rubbing to trace the relief a little.

It does, but that would make it a lot shorter than the C and numbers, which is unlikely. Hence I would expect it to be as tall as the C, which doesn’t rule out an M, but makes the other two possible.
I would expect the characters to be the same size/width/frequency, so there should be 3 characters there unless the stamp was a group of characters that didn’t change (and were on a single die).

That’s why I couldn’t commit haha.

I tried but it was not helpful maybe I will try with a crayon.

That didn’t work at all like I expected.

Maybe a 4 instead of an A?
![]() 04/19/2018 at 10:57 |

possible. I was basing the A on the seeming meeting of two angled lines at the top.

I am stumped. C 14#263371 ? It looks like the part number for the frame rail. I cannot find the part number of an S10 frame rail online. The part number should be 8 digits.

do we know the standard format? all numbers? 1 letter 9 numbers?

Press it harder onto the screen.

I don’t really know because I’m not certain what year the truck is but it looks like it should be nine characters with the last six being the chassis number C means it’s a chevy. Two characters tell you about the config and then this was number 203371 produced.

This is supposed to be a partial vin.
![]() 04/19/2018 at 11:35 |

My best guess is “c 1 7 3 2 0 3 3 7 1"

C 1982 S10

hmm, so likely it’s C, then three letters (or two letters and a space), then 203371.
![]() 04/19/2018 at 12:34 |

It’s hand-stamped, you can tell from the legible ones. Same height characters, but rotation and spacing are a little variable.

I’m confused how do you get 1982 from that?
![]() 04/19/2018 at 13:11 |

C##263371 are probably the final digits of the VIN. C would be the model year 1982 or 2012.

I am not seeing this. It looks like they put dies in a holder and stamped all at once, even though the numbers look rotated oddly, they’re rotated consistently. It reminds me of the way they do VIN plates to avoid ambiguity.
The missing characters look to have been removed by corrosion over an extended period of time...

You could be right. I was thinking the 2 looked a little out of plane, but some type of jig would be suggested at a minimum. I have a number of cars with pieces hand-stamped *badly* out of line, and some that are better.

Oh yeah that makes sense. Thanks! That’s really useful to know.
